MEMBERSHIP FAQ

Everything You Need to Know

Why is Chabad moving to a membership model?

Until now, our programs have been funded entirely by voluntary donations. As our community has grown, so have our costs — including the upkeep of our beautiful new Chabad center. In order to sustain and grow our programming, we're inviting individuals and families to become members and help carry this community forward.

Can we still participate in events if we’re not members?

Yes. Chabad will always be a welcoming space for every Jew. While membership offers meaningful benefits and helps sustain the community, our doors are open to non-members as well.

What are the benefits of membership?

  • Complimentary High Holiday seats for your immediate family
  • Highly discounted rates on townhouse for your lifecycle celebrations
  • Priority access to Hebrew school and Bar/Bat Mitzvah prep
  • Members-only Friday night dinner
  • Shabbat Services Access: Due to space limitations, doors close at 11:00 AM to non-members. Members enjoy all-day entry.
  • Complimentary Shmurah Matzah for Passover
  • Purim Mishloach Manot basket delivered to your West Village home
  • Lulav & Etrog set for Sukkot available in the West Village
  • Menorah & candles kit mailed to college-age children
  • Belonging to a vibrant Jewish community and forming lifelong friendships

What if I can’t afford membership?

No one will ever be turned away due to finances. If you are unable to afford the full amount, please reach out to us for a confidential arrangement. Your presence matters far more than anything else.

What is the membership year?

Our membership year runs from September through August.

Are High Holiday seats available to non-members?

Yes. While seats are complimentary for members, non-members may also reserve seats for purchase.

I recently gave a generous donation. Can it count toward membership?

First of all, thank you! If you gave at or above the membership level, we’re happy to apply your gift toward membership. Please contact us to request that.

What’s the difference between Membership and the Chai Club?

Membership is the foundation of our community’s sustainability. It’s what we ask of every individual or family who calls Chabad their home—an annual commitment that helps cover the essential costs of running our center and programs.

The Chai Club is an additional charitable giving circle, made up of generous individuals who go above and beyond to support our growth and vision. Chai Club members enjoy distinct benefits and recognition—but it’s not a substitute for membership.

While we are incredibly grateful to those who can participate in both, we encourage everyone to prioritize membership first. It’s how we keep the lights on, the doors open, and the community strong.

How will Shabbat mornings change?

We’ve been incredibly lucky—Shabbat mornings have taken on a life of their own. From spirited davening to a lavish kiddush that people stay for well into the afternoon, our space is often full to the brim with a line out the door. This often makes the experience quite uncomfortable.

To make sure that everyone can continue to enjoy it, final entry for non-members will be at 11:00am. Members will be able to come in anytime.

That said, if you’ve never been to our services before, we’d love for you to join us. This isn’t about being exclusive—it’s about making sure there’s room to breathe, sing, and celebrate together!
